How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photography Session

A Gentle Guide for New Parents

Welcoming a newborn is a season filled with softness, adjustment, and emotion — and your newborn photography session should reflect that same calm and care. As a St. Louis newborn and family photographer, my approach is intentionally gentle and baby-led, creating timeless, heirloom images that still feel honest to your real motherhood experience.

Preparing for your session doesn’t require perfection. A few thoughtful steps can help ensure your newborn session feels relaxed, unhurried, and enjoyable for everyone involved.

Feed Baby Just Before Your Session

One of the simplest and most effective ways to help your newborn settle into their session is to feed your baby just before we begin. A full, content baby is naturally more relaxed and often sleepier — which allows the session to unfold gently and comfortably.

If your baby needs additional feeding time during the session, that’s completely expected. Newborn sessions are never rushed, and breaks are always welcomed.

Give Baby a Gentle Bath Before the Session

If timing allows, giving your baby a warm bath before the session can help them relax and soothe their skin. Many parents find that adding an oat-based bath blend is especially helpful for calming irritation and dryness.

After the bath, apply a gentle baby lotion to moisturize your baby’s skin. This helps minimize dryness and flakiness while keeping skin soft and comfortable — especially important for close, detailed newborn images.

Dress Baby in Simple, Comfortable Clothing

Simple clothing photographs best. Soft, neutral pieces without logos or patterns keep the focus on your baby’s features and expression.

I also provide a selection of newborn outfits and wraps for sessions, chosen for their softness, comfort, and timeless appeal. Many parents choose to arrive with baby dressed comfortably and allow outfit changes to happen naturally during the session.

Bring Sentimental Items If You’d Like

Newborn sessions are a beautiful opportunity to incorporate meaningful details. If you have sentimental items such as a handmade blanket, a special stuffed animal, or a family heirloom, you’re welcome to bring them along.

These pieces can be included subtly, adding a layer of personal meaning to your images while still maintaining a refined, cohesive look.

Wear Something Comfortable and Timeless

For parents, comfort matters — especially during the postpartum period. Soft fabrics, neutral tones, and simple silhouettes photograph beautifully and allow you to move, hold your baby, and be present.

I also offer access to a client wardrobe, including pregnancy and postpartum-friendly dresses, designed to photograph elegantly while prioritizing comfort and ease.

Plan for a Calm, Unhurried Experience

Newborn photography sessions are intentionally slower and more flexible than other sessions. Babies may need to be fed, soothed, or changed — and that’s part of the experience.

My role is to guide you gently while allowing space for real moments to unfold. There is no expectation for babies to perform or settle on a schedule. This softer approach results in images that feel authentic, peaceful, and timeless.

Trust the Process

Perhaps the most important preparation is simply trusting that everything doesn’t need to be perfect. Some of the most meaningful images come from quiet in-between moments — a hand resting on your baby’s back, a shared glance, the way your newborn curls naturally into you.

As your St. Louis newborn photographer, my goal is to create an experience that feels supportive, calm, and deeply respectful of this season of life.
